Savings on the Snow

Denver and much of the Rockies has been hit with one of the largest snow
storms in years. While this can be problematic for travelers and people living in the areas
hardest hit by the snow, it signals the beginning of a great year for snow sport enthusiasts.
What better time to discuss some of the best senior discounts around, those offered by ski
areas.
There are of course discounts available on lodging, car rentals, restaurants
and other services one might use while traveling to and staying at winter resorts, but some of
the best discounts will be found on lift tickets, rentals and lessons.
Many ski areas offer discounted lift ticket rates for older skiers. Typically
ski areas will offer different rates depending on one's age. Discounts usually start around the
age of 60 or 62 and can range between a 15% discount on the lift ticket price to no charge at all.
Yes, that is correct, some ski areas offer free skiing to skiers of a certain age. People in their
sixties can expect to see discounts of 15% to 75% off a daily ticket price and anywhere from 30%
to 80% off season passes. Free skiing and deeply discounted lift ticket rates are usually reserved
for skiers in their seventies and older.
The majority of ski areas have web sites, and one can find their senior rates
listed there. You can also call the area for its rates and specials. When booking a trip, be sure
to ask about multiple day prices, especially if you don't yet qualify for and age-related discount.
Some ski areas will have special senior packages that include air fare, lodging, lift tickets,
rentals and lessons.
If you are not eligible for those senior discounts, check out the ski area's
season passes. Many ski areas are now offering season passes to multiple mountains at very
discounted prices. Often, you will only need to ski a couple of days to recoup the cost. Also,
check out local grocery, stores, retail stores, hotels and gas stations in proximity to a ski area.
Many of them will sell discounted ski tickets.
There are also ski clubs just for seniors. The Over the Hill Gang and the 70+
Ski Club are just two of the many clubs available. These clubs provide discounted prices and rentals,
fun trips, and new friends to ski with.
Discounts can also be found on lessons and rentals. Many areas provide ski
programs that are specifically designed for older skiers and will be reduced in cost. One may also
find discounts on ski rentals, but generally only at the rental shops owned by the ski areas.
Independently owned ski shops typically do not have age related discounts.
So enjoy the snow and save some money this season.
