Grocery Stores

It can be difficult to know where to look for savings on your grocery bill, so here is some general information about what you can expect from the potential savings at grocery stores as well as a list of some of the regional stores that provide discounts.

National vs. Local stores:
While there are a few national grocery store chains that do offer discounts to seniors, it is the smaller, local specialty stores, regional chains and co-ops that are more likely to offer a senior discount. These local stores have more flexibly in establishing their pricing are competing with the larger stores for your business.

Discount Amount:
Grocery stores usually have a low-mark up on their goods so expect to find discounts of 5% to 10%. Certain products are typically not included in most supermarkets' senior discounts. These products include prescription drugs, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, gift cards and certificates.

Availability:
Discount are almost always offered either one day a week or one day per month, as stores are trying to attract shoppers on their slower days. But there are exceptions as some stores offer discounts every day. The most common days for a senior discount are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Age Requirements:
As always, the age requirements can vary by store, but usually begin at the age of 55, while some may not be offered until 60 or 62.

Here are a few examples of discounts offered at some regional chains:

Bi-Lo Grocery Store - Located in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Save an extra 5% with the Senior Bonuscard every Wednesday.

Foodland - Some Foodland Stores offer a senior discount of 5% one day a week. The day of the discount, discount amount and age requirement varies for each store.

Fry's Food & Drug - Located in Arizona, shoppers 55 or older save 10% on the total food bill on the first Wednesday of every month. Must be a member of the Fry's VIP Club.

Harris Teeters Grocery Store - Located in the Southeast US. Shoppers 60+ save 5% on groceries every Tuesday. Not all stores participate. Age requirements vary by location.

Kroger Grocery Stores - Typically a 5% discount on Tuesdays for shoppers 55 and older. Day, age requirement, discount amount and store participation vary.

Meijer - About once a month, Meijer offers a Senior Discount Day featuring 15% off General Merchandise. Senior Discount Days usually occur Monday or Tuesday.

Price Chopper - Customers 60+ receive special discounts and offers with the Senior AdvantEdge program. Visit a local store or the web site for details.

Ralph's Grocery Store - Located mainly in California, seniors 60+ save an extra $1 on their grocery bill with each $10 purchase on Ralph's Private Label Products.

Shop N Save - Located in the Midwest, many locations offer a 10% discount one day a week. Check with a local Shop N Save for participation and information.

Wild Oats Natural Marketplace - There is a 10% discount one day a week. Day, age requirement, discount amount and store participation vary.

Continental offers senior fares to selected travel destinations for passengers who are 65 and older. Ask for more details about these fares when you make your reservation, or when you make your reservation online; select the Seniors (age 65 and older) category.
